Antivirus
Scammers Cost Consumers
Beware of a pop-up window that shows up on your PC telling you that you
have a virus problem: It’s likely a fake. According to a warning by
the FBI’s IC3 (Internet Crime Complaint Center), what have been called
“rogue anti-virus programs” have made more than $150 million for
scammers who use the virus infection claim to lure computer users into
buying their wares. Typically, the scammers then demand a credit card
number. Organizations such as The New York Times and Office Depot
have also been victimized. If you receive such a warning, the IC3 says
to immediately run an antivirus scan to assess the situation.
